NQTA is proud to promote the Hunt Farm Open Barn on August 11. We are assisting in the parking detail and we will have a tent set up for our maps and Mary Canning's bee products.
I invite all NQTA members to come to this free, exciting and educational program.
This is a rain-or-shine event, so please dress appropriately. Dogs and cows don't mix, so please do not bring any pets; even Celtz can't come.
We openly welcome people of all challenges and will have a special area for parking and NQTA folks there to assist you. We're proud to partner with Hunt Farm for this community event!
Visit Hunt Farm on Facebook for more information.
Published on the 50th anniversary of Marcel Duchamp's death, Duchamp's Last Day offers a radical reading of the artist's final hours. Just moments after Duchamp died, his closest friend, Man Ray, took a photograph of him. His face is wan; his eyes are closed; he appears calm. Taking this image as a point of departure, Donald Shambroom examines its context―the dinner with Man Ray and another friend, Robert Lebel, the night Duchamp died, the conversations about his own death at that dinner and elsewhere and the larger question of whether Duchamp's death can be read as an extension of his work.
Shambroom's research into this final night and his analysis of the photograph feeds into questions about the nature of artworks and authorship, which Duchamp raised in his lifetime. In the case of this once long-lost photograph (reproduced for the first time here), who is the author―Man Ray or Duchamp? Is it an artwork or merely a record? Duchamp's Last Day is filled with intricate details from decades of research into this peculiar encounter between art, life and death.
Donald Shambroom (born 1950) is a visual artist, writer and curator whose work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. In 1973, after graduating from Yale University where he studied philosophy and painting, Shambroom moved to Boston to pursue his career as a painter. His work has been shown at Francis Naumann gallery and Half Gallery in New York, and at Howard Yezerski Gallery in Boston. For the past decade, he has lived and worked on the banks of the Millers River in north central Massachusetts.
We had a wonderful and fun-filled day of hiking at Red Apple Farm with Shoulder to Shoulder, a military family support group through Jewish Family and Children's Services. NQTA provided the trail guides for the beautiful trails at Red Apple Farm, and the complimentary doughnuts were enjoyed by all. Please enjoy this small clip from the beginning of the day.
Hello all Forest Peeps,
Monday March 12th 6 o'clock at Orange Innovation Center 3rd. floor 131 West Main Street is the time and place for this month's Gathering.
Please bring those "Delicious Dishes" as always and I thank you for these Delicious Dishes for the past several years as they have made for a wonderful communal meal time together.
To continue the Hot Streak of quality speakers at our Gatherings for the past couple of months NQTA proudly presents--
Guest Speaker Bri Pena:
Bri is Mount Wachusett Community College's Career Developmental Coach. Last month's Guest Speaker Doctor John Henshaw is the Director of this program for the free Robotic and Advanced Technical training. He introduced us to this program.
Bri is the 'boots-on-the-ground' representative and lead contact to start the implementation process.
I will be reaching out to the Vet Organizations for the youths in their twenties and our own NQTA Youth Community leader Ally will be bringing in the youths of high school age to attend and take advantage of this wonderful program.
Bri will be there to set up campus visits and give detailed information to begin the implementation process (an NQTA favorite word ) for the youths in the Quabbin Region age 17 to 29.
All are welcome and encouraged to come learn more about this exciting program.
I am personally grateful and proud to announce that Red Apple Farm owner and leading North Quabbin entrepreneur Al Rose will be this month's Educational Speaker
Al's educational talk will focus on the history of the lineage of the generational changes to Red Apple Farm.
It will emphasize the business change from patriarch Bill Rose to Al's vision of the development of the business model "A Country Experience" for Red Apple farm.
Al has been a personal friend (and fellow A.T thru hiker) and has allowed NQTA in so many ways to develop as a outdoor trail organization.
The NQTA custom-designed Red Apple trail system is a personal laboratory of tick eradication, blazing, proper mapping and trail development.
I encourage all entrepreneurs both young and old to come and learn from Al on how we can utilize the natural resources of our North Quabbin for both community and financial betterment and sustainability.
The Red Apple Farm is also one of the area's leading youth employers during it's seasonal cycle.
⭐ And finally, NQTA is now in its Membership Cycle Time.
I have been so grateful and humbled by all of your support in the past and ask for your continued support. Our growth has created the need for General Trail Liability Insurance and funds to help with the daily cost of running a larger and more social community active organization.
Of course as part of your membership many new NQTA Custom Designed Maps will be coming out this year starting with the new Poplar Mountain Ridge Loop Trail now available.
All maps will be available at this Gathering to get everybody caught up.
Please go to nqta.org for more membership information ⭐
Thanks again for all of your support.
See you on March 12th with those Delicious Dishes.

⭐ Back to our main educational speakers The Nolumbeka Project
NQTA has had some of its finest Spiritual and Stewardship days working over at Great Falls at the Wissatinnewag village, ancient burial grounds and Native American Gathering site and at this Gathering looks to continues this relationship in the upcoming stewardship season.
Building circular three sisters gardens, collection of lava rocks, invasive species work and wonderful education on this 12,000 year old Native American sacred site.
David Brule Nolumbeka Project Program Director will be coming to talk on this Wissatinnewag site and again directly from David's own words.
I will give a history talk about Tribal presence at the falls, a history of the National Park Service project we are working on studying the massacre there in 1676. I can also talk about future projects for the Wissatinnewag site in general terms of preservation, restoration, education, etc.
I do have a few slides on my flashdrive to share.
Again, please understand the thrust will be cultural history about the falls site, and developing a master plan for Wissatinewag..!
Brent Pitcher in working with Howard Clark's research on "The History of Maize" will be attending and an interactive display example of this back breeding maize and a few photos of this new presentation. (no maize, no social civilization)
Due to the amount of exciting information in this new "History of Maize" presentation NQTA will be looking to do a Part 2 series with the Nolumbeka Project folks to ensure that we get a full education and are made aware of stewardship opportunities.
There will be a stewardship sign up sheet so NQTA and the community can be a partner with the Nolumbeka folks in the upcoming spring and summer stewardship seasons.
So WOW technology meets history at this very special NQTA Gathering.
I have had a lot of requests for these Nolumbeka Project peeps to come join us.
So please come on out of your house, out of your pajamas and come join us for this very special Educational Monday February 12th at 6 o'clock Gathering at OIC and please remember those Delicious Dishes.
I also welcome all of our friends over at the Nolumbeka Project to join us for this communal meal and Gathering time together.
Hello All Forest Friends,
This upcoming Monday October 16th at the OIC, 6 PM on the 3rd floor, is NQTA's monthly Gathering time.
Please bring those Autumn Delicious Dishes!
We're happy that our October meeting will welcome a presentation from a local, family business. Heather Hunt of Hunt Farm will be attending to share some insight into the Mass dairy industry, including their own farm practices, and fun facts about dairy farms. She will leave time for question and answers at the end.
NQTA recently partnered with an event at Hunt Farm, assisting in the parking lot duties.
A true collaboration and friendship has, and is, growing.
This education program goes to the very core of the vision I've had of what a NQTA gathering should be of good food, fun and great educational resources.
I encourage ALL to join us for this special gathering and support Heather and Hunt Farm.
This is a free event for all in the community so please join us for a good meal and great education.
A hip happening Gathering update:

Hello All Forest Peeps
Monday August 14th at 6 o'clock at OIC is NQTA's monthly Gathering time.
Please bring those summer delicious dishes and desserts.
Sorry for the late notice there is a lot of moving parts going on right now in this development.
NQTA's 2 part Tick Gathering was an informative and educational success and we are ready for the same procedure with our Honeybee Gathering in partnership with Mary Canning and Follow the Honey .
Since our last Honeybee Gathering a lot has transpired at NQTA's and FTH joint headquarters at OIC and we are ready to unveil all this exciting community development to you.
At OIC the 'Shady Grove' backlot area that NQTA is cutting literally out of the brush and thorns, a true community vision has unfolded.
A picnic / amphitheater, exercise , artist areas along with a expanded 'agrian vision' has taken hold of the big 3 of Honeybee aparies, Shiitake mushrooms innoculation logs and Pollination habitat with the creation of a "edible forest".
We will start the evening meeting with Mary and the new players that are helping leading this effort getting us caught up.
Then a walkabout out to this back area to see all this as it has been initially constructed ,along with a artist rendition of what the future holds that you are all welcome to be a part of.
Then a walk over to Mary's new bee product production center at OIC with brand new products just now being created.
We are looking by utilizing the nearby Hosmer Woods, that NQTA has a trail easement with NEFF, to create a commercial entity for employment opportunities for the underserved in our community using these agrian products as a base.
So come see the new apiary, mushroom castle and the unveiling of 'Shady Grove' that is in line with the community vision of inclusion that our partners at OIC are providing for our community .
We have sent you an invitation to Mary's 'Hoedown at the Hollow ' that NQTA is partnering with and we welcome you all to join us.
Truly Upward and Onward
In NQTA's concerted effort to bring current , critical educational information to N. Quabbin (and beyond) we are tackling the number # 1 issue and concern on the trails and in your own backyard , the frightening amount of tick presence happening right now.
I have heard from multiple sources that this year is an all time high of tick infestation and Celtz my Collie and I have been ( on certain trails ) under a tick siege .
It's time to get fully educated and not let these nefarious ticks take away your enjoyment of your special outdoor time.
So for the first time NQTA is having a 2 Part Gathering series on this tick crisis.
Monday June 12th at 6 o'clock at OIC we will be presenting "Attatck the Ticks Part 1 " with a Open Forum of information led by Community Outreach / Public Health nurse Pam Jobst .
Pam will be educating us on the many facets of Lyme disease and prevention and other pertinent and current information .
Debra Vondal ,Town of Athol Board of Health Agent who has given her full support but unable to attend due to Athol Town meeting is providing some wonderful colored educational phamplets on ticks and mosquitos and tick identification cards, these will be available free of charge ( thanks Deb).
NQTA team has been working on collecting all forms of educational materials for use with humans and our pets and will have educational handouts on chemical, natural and holistic remedies and contacts for support groups again free of charge.
The positive information includes the
re-introduction of the native Bobwhite Quail that these ticks are their main diet , what a wonderful natural solution and NQTA will reach out to be part of this program.
NQTA will be instituting a new program of rating the trails from a 1 to 4 ticks for awareness of where to hike where the ticks aren't such an issue. ( Birch Hill / Lake Dennison Trails ) and trails to stay off right now.
Also information on the new tick Powassan virus (whew) .
So come get empowered on education and practical information on how to be part of the solution and be able to enjoy your outdoor time.
As this is an Open Forum all will be invited and welcomed to speak on your expertise and research , so put on those thinking caps.
Don't forget those Spring Delicious Dishes and Desserts , thank you all for your support in our membership drive and welcome all to continue to be a member and certainly welcome all new people to help NQTA grow its community betterment projects .
All membership maps will be available at Gathering.
So let's fight back and " Attack the Ticks" and see you Monday June 12th at 6 o'clock .
Upward and Onward !

Hello All Forest Peeps ,
There has been an EXPLOSION of ticks out on the trails in the last week .
Don , Celtz and I walked the M/ B river trail and over the last couple of days I have hiked other trails and with OVER A 100 taking immediately off Celtz , he has the very best Seresto collar on and I sprayed insert repellant on him but the assault is on .
Please use all insect replellants and cloth precautions.
The best way to avoid a full attack is to plan your hikes on well established open trails and stay off grassey , not well maintained trails .
During breaks a full inspection on yourself and pets and remove the ticks IMMEDIATELY.
I personally and in discussion with forest veterans have NEVER seen these tick conditions !
In good news the vast majority are the larger ' dog tick ' not the smaller ' deer tick ' that carry Lyme disease .
NQTA will be having a 2 part upcoming Gatherings completely devoted to all control measures for human and animals and bringing in health specialists you are welcome to join us to educate yourself on this underspoken health crisis .
This is not meant to discourage anyone from the stunning beauty of Spring , but true awareness is needed for everyone out on the trails .
Please put this notice to all your circle of friends and social media .
Mary will be also bringing in Dr Kim Skyrm, Chief Apiary Inspector for the State.
The focus of this Gathering is not only awareness but with the assistance of Mary the creation of apiaries and pollination habitats both big and small utilizing the many, many land oppurtunies here in the N Quabbin.
So I'm putting out the Gathering notice early.
Monday May 8th at 6 o'clock at OIC
(Orange Innovation Center)
131 West Main st
Please bring those Spring Delicious Dishes and Desserts.
NQTA membership map
"Stratton/Mount Grace /Warwick Forest" in it's new format will be available at this Gathering and Please Remember NQTA's membership drive is on to keep this train rolling and thank you each of you for your continued support.
Next month we are working hard on compiling all information available for Tick Awareness and Prevention both for humans and animals, take care out there on the trails and check yourself and pets after hiking.
If you have any particular useful information on this subject please feel free to let me know.
Upward and Onward 🍀

At our Gatherings while the food and educational speakers are vital the one thing always missing has been music.
So I'd like to introduce Michael Young , Pat's husband another jem of the N Quabbin who will be regaling us with his Native American fluetist songs and telling us some of his unique tales , cool huh !
Also I will be unveiling the newly defined trackline of the 200 mile Q+M trail.

The Town of Athol Open Space and Recreation Committee is in full swing working to update the town’s Open Space and Recreation Plan. The plan will help determine what the town does in the next 7 years to improve our parks, beaches, playgrounds, ball fields, and natural areas available for wildlife watching, hiking, fishing, and more.
With an updated Open Space and Recreation Plan, the town will be eligible to apply for grants to help preserve the rural character of Athol and address the community's desire for recreation areas.
The committee needs your help. It has put together a public survey to gather the communities opinions to make sure the committee works on issues most important to the town. The best way to complete the survey is online at:
